In this short talk, Neil Jurd introduces a practical and straightforward approach to decision-making called “The Estimate.” He explains the challenges posed by today’s increasingly complex world, emphasising the importance of making timely and effective decisions despite uncertainties.
Neil explains the Estimate process, based on the idea that it is better to make a slightly worse decision on time compared to a better one too late. This process is derived from military planning and consists of six key stages. It begins with establishing a clear timeline, ensuring that decisions are made within a realistic timeframe to avoid hasty choices. Understanding the current situation is then emphasised, highlighting the importance of being well informed before any decisions are made.
Next, Neil emphasises the importance of clarifying objectives, guiding leaders to articulate their goals. Afterwards factors influencing the situation should be considered, prompting critical thinking and exploration of the possible routes that could be taken. This stage suggests asking questions, such as “So what?” to encourage deeper reflection.
In turn, multiple courses of action are devised based on the information gathered, offering different approaches to achieving the objective. Neil explains the importance of analysing these options critically to anticipate potential outcomes and ensure alignment with organisational values.
Finally, the chosen plan is shared enthusiastically, inviting feedback and collaboration for further development. Neil concludes by encouraging you to reflect on how to integrate the Estimate process into your decision-making practices.
