What is Situational Leadership?

In the first of 3 short blogs, Leader-Connect defines some Leadership styles.

Situational leadership is where leadership rests with the most appropriate team member to handle a specific challenge.  For example a project to improve a company’s social media presence might be led by a relatively junior team member who happens to have the skills and interest to lead on that line of work, whilst more senior and experienced leaders take a supporting and enabling role.

For situational leadership to work, a well-developed and trusting culture where purpose is more important that position is necessary.  In organisations where senior leaders need to control every detail and be involved in every decision situational leadership isn’t really possible.

In his best-selling ‘The Leadership Book’ Neil Jurd OBE explains that leadership is just a role in the team and that the leader should not consider themselves special of better than other team members, he or she is just responsible for identifying the objective and engaging others in pursuit of the objective.
