Heather begins this talk by sharing that most people believe they are emotionally intelligent. A study in 2018 of 467 professional individuals questioned their emotional intelligence – from this study, 95% believed that they were emotionally intelligent and when tested, only 10% were.
Heather linked to the work of Dan Goleman, who first coined the phrase of Emotional Intelligence back in 1990. She feels that from Goleman’s extensive work and more recent research, individuals perceive that they know how to manage and display their emotions better than they do.
To allow the professional to enhance their emotional intelligence and self-awareness, Heather highlighted the use of the Johari Window model. This model is made up of four quadrants whereby the individual can assess their open self, hidden self, blind self and unknown self. Each quadrant can be of differing sizes depending on your personality type. By looking at your smallest window, you can decide on how you wish to make small changes to enhance your self awareness which will, in turn, open your emotional intelligence.
