About this podcast

What does good leadership really look like when it comes to people?
In this conversation, Rachel Diss, explores why diversity and inclusion isn’t a separate initiative or “nice to have” — it’s a fundamental part of leading any team effectively.

The Leadership Reality: It’s not about labels – it’s about people
There’s often resistance to diversity and inclusion — seen by some as political or unnecessary. But strip it back, and the reality is much simpler. Leadership is about understanding people.

Their:

  • background
  • experiences
  • ways of thinking
  • how they communicate and learn

If you ignore that, you’re not simplifying leadership — you’re limiting it.

Trust Drives Performance: If people don’t trust you, they won’t tell you the truth
When leaders don’t take the time to understand individuals:

  • communication becomes filtered
  • people hold back
  • trust breaks down

And without trust, you’re leading without the full picture. People don’t perform at their best when they feel misunderstood

What inclusive leadership really means: This isn’t “extra” – it’s core to leadership.
Inclusive leadership isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about:

  • being open-minded
  • observing what people need
  • building rapport
  • creating an environment where people feel safe to contribute

Because when people feel understood:

  • they engage more
  • they communicate openly
  • they perform better

Dismissing diversity and inclusion doesn’t remove complexity from leadership.
It removes your ability to lead people well.
